]]>Antigua is an island in the West Indies, in the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean region, the main island of the country of Antigua and Barbuda.
A former British colony, Antigua has many architectural reminders of its colonial past, from the sugar plantations, to the Georgian buildings at Nelson’s Dockyard and the fortress at Shirley Heights. The British colonised it in the 17th century, when it became a sugar-cane producer. With strong trade winds and a near perfect coral reef, it was also perfect for hiding the navy, characteristics that now attract tourists for world-class sailing and snorkelling.
